Is anyone here familiar with *current* practices at The College of Arms in England and/or Lyon Court in Scotland with regard to the use of designations of "gentleman" and "esquire" in letters patents/grants of arms? My impression is that they are not included in Lyon grants but sometimes may be in College grants, although I am not sure in what circumstances.

Thanks.

Best wishes,

I am recorded in my College of Arms Letters Patent as "Esquire in the Commission of the Peace" however, my Scottish matriculation of those English arms simply records that I am "in the Commission of the Peace". I did enquire of Lyon Clerk as to the reason why the the "esquire" had been omitted and was informed quite simply that the term "esquire" was not used in Scotland.

I hope this may be of some assistance.

Regards,
Martin

Thank you.

Am I correct in assuming that LL also never includes "gentleman"?
