Well, it's tradition for heralds to be pedantic. so i'll point out that it's
the third, not fourth dimension. Unless you get the central focus to rotate
like a clock or go in and out, up and down, etc..it'll have to be a video
file next time...

not pedantic
- if you look closely (the first one is partially out of Glass)
- Movie ;)very possible...that's why the program is called .....4D

Nice work...

But:
1. Translucency does not add a new dimension
2. In fact it's not even 3D -- just 2D pretending to be 3D
3. And what's so new about heraldry in 3D?

Nice work...
1. Translucency does not add a new dimension
nor even change the color/metal scheme. I would argue that clear glass or
with a smoked tint would equal argent, just as grey or white paint would
equal argent. reddish tint or yellow tint, etc, would all equal their
respective schemes.....

I wouldn't argue too much around the tinctures,
while this program opens up some
"nifty" possibilities ;)

many of the metals and textures would need to be created from scratch,
the existing once are either (for my taste) to new
or just don't relate!
Also it isn't as easy as one might think,
I estimate a working time of one week
just for a nice looking helmet

But again, to see your Arms in 3D or 4D,
or just the mantling being animated by a breeze of wind
...is worth to look in to this possibility!

Don't forget,
once you modeled and rendered your grit-mesh,
you can send this file to any computer generated 3D modeling company, which could make your Arms in any material you choose
or like, as long as their machines/tools can handle your material of choice!

Final Size...
from about the size of a coin, to many yards in height!

yes, i DO think it's a "nifty" program, no question. Have you been keeping
up with the progress in three-dimensional printers? The files can probably
be converted to "printout" in 3-D metal, plastic, or other synthetic, in any
size or even any combination.

No haven't, but it would interest me due to my profession

I am working on an idea (new surface structure for windmills)
it might come handy... ;)

two or three is one thing, even scenic. When a farm of fifty of them take
over, it's disgusting. And putting them in military formation just makes it
worse. What's hilarious is seeing a
proposal to put a bunch of them off a coastline and it's the greenies who
support windpower that howl in protest of their spoiled view!!

fraid not. But I've seen videos here and there.."the Colbert Report" of all
places, had one once. The origianl was a contraption that could place a bit
of hot synthetic or not, at each x,y co-ordianate layer by layer until the
top. The new ones are a box of micro beads that are hit by lasers. Where the
lasers intersect at an x,y point they will fuse. The finished project is then
"fished out" of the floating sea of beads. Seems to me that since larger
objects will "float" on a bed of smaller, especially uniform shaped smaller,
objects, a subroutine could vibrate the beads to make the finished product
"float" to the top. And a skimmer could push it out.
In both cases, support forums and files of already scanned/created objects
exist that u can download and "print".

Aah, I have worked with this about three years ago,
as far as I know the final model can only be created with a resin ......but I took that resin model and made a casting form for sterling silver!

That's correct, the resin was the "hot synthetic" I was describing above.
However, the resin can be various combinations of hot synthetic now days.
They even have a printer that can be loaded with confectionary resin(s) to
print out cakes, cupcakes, and other dieting kryptonite!!

1. Translucency does not add a new dimension
2. In fact it's not even 3D -- just 2D pretending to be 3D
3. And what's so new about heraldry in 3D?
I have often wondered whether the medieval knights would have made use
of transparent elements or mirror elements had they had suitable
materials. After all police riot shields are often transparent and a
mirror could be a great distraction on a jousting field. Having
elements of both alongside the usual pallet might not have been
rejected if it produced some aesthetically pleasing and recognisable
design. If so, why not let it develop in the modern world.

I am sure an inventive heraldic artist could even produce a velum
patent with transparent and mirrored elements.

However, with a fair proportion of modern heraldic use becoming
computer based and 'virtual' with the possibilities also of
hologrammes, we should be tollerant of innovation

The BBC had its arms displayed innovatively with a translucent virtual
shield for years on its news programmes but apparently consider it now
passé and have dropped it, but the passé is perhaps what heraldry is
about?

However, I shall probably stick with the old, for now at least, unless
someone can come up with a nice file showing my escutcheons rotating
like the Open University.

Derek,
with this program
you can animate and rotate your escutcheon or Arms any way you like!

so the reader has a better understanding what this program really is, I am adding the architectural drawing of the last shield!
