Discussion:
Did the British legally deny the title of Emperor to Napoleon?

I seem to recall that once upon a time it was stated here in rec.heraldry that the British passed an Act denying the title of Emperor to Napoleon, who was to be known simply as General Bonaparte. I believe it was also claimed that this law (or simply policy?) was the cause of a court martial of a British army officer, who made the mistake of addressing Napoleon as emperor. In addition, I may have seen oblique reference to this elsewhere. However, I can find no authoritative source for this.
Can anyone shed some light on this, one way or another?

There does not appear to be any authoritative Parliamentary Act for such an instruction; it is now possible to search the Parliamentary archives on-line. The Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Volume 18 refers simply to an order given to the Officers responsible for his custody to refer to him simply as General.

I hope this helps.

As the 'legitimate ruler' of France was a direct heir in exile of the decapitated king of France, Napoleon could not be king without the heir either collaborating or a legal act from an accepted authoritative power - like the French Assembly.
In addition, with France having an apparent king-to-be-in-exile and under the protection of the opposing monarchs, Napoleon couldn't be emperor either because France wasn't an accepted empire. It may have been thisthat drove Napoleon to 'dissolving' the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation - or The Reich - and the title of Roman (German) Emperor. That and the fact that his newly minted father-in-law, the Habsburg Emperor was already Emperor of Austria and didn't need the title anymore.

But in regards to your question about legal documents or acts on the British side of things, I can't help. Sorry.
Cheers,
Robert.

So that would make Charlemagne and the Pope who made him Emperor Nazis then?
Or was it Otto I a century later who added the German Nation bit... I forgot.
In any case, Franks are Germans much like Saxons, Bayovars, and all the others.

Tell that to the French.

Les Français seront des Franken, l'Empire des Français/Frankreich serait l'Empire des Francs, un quelconque tribu teutonique!
