I seem to recall that once upon a time it was stated here in rec.heraldry that the British passed an Act denying the title of Emperor to Napoleon, who was to be known simply as General Bonaparte. I believe it was also claimed that this law (or simply policy?) was the cause of a court martial of a British army officer, who made the mistake of addressing Napoleon as emperor. In addition, I may have seen oblique reference to this elsewhere. However, I can find no authoritative source for this.
Can anyone shed some light on this, one way or another?
