Hi all,

The letters patent of the augmentation of arms granted in 1679 to Francis Burghill, Mowbray Herald Extraordinary, sold at public auction in July 2013. Burghill's arms are blazoned Paly of 6 pieces argent & sable, on a bend gules an Eastern crown or. Crest: A lion's head erased argent crowned with an Eastern crown gold. The addition of the crown was in recognition of his services as agent of the Duke of Norfolk, Ambassador Extraordinary to the Emperor of Morocco:

From the text of the LP it would appear that Burghill's trip to Morocco was in 1669. I think that was the same year that Lord Henry Howard traveled to Tangier and met with Mulay Rashid aka Tafiletta, the Sultan of Morocco, to negotiate a commercial treaty. I think the ships carrying Howard and Burghill back to Britain afterwards were involved in the famous Battle of Cadiz: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_C%C3%A1diz_%281669%29

Burghill was created Mowbray Herald Extraordinary in 1677 and then created Somerset Herald in 1680. In 1681 Burghill and Gregory King, Rouge Dragon Pursuivant, were sent to conduct the visitations of Northamptonshire and Rutland, but Burghill left King to do all of the work:
